I quit cigarettes cold turkey after smoking for 29 years, in May 2014.
I started walking more in 2015, and from April 2015 to April 2016 I lost 35 kg (80 lbs), using the free My Fitness Pal app to track calories.

I ran my first marathon at age 50 in August 2017.
I ran 50 km on June 10, 2018.

You might as well keep trying because the time will pass anyway.
